Chris Allwood who from his experience as Vice Chairman and then Chairman of the Emsworth Food Festival spanning six years learnt that a good food festival can achieve amazing things. The Emsworth Food Festival was originally conceived to reverse the decline in the local retail sector, a large part of which sold fresh food. It certainly achieved that and much more, it was a true success.
Following on from the Emsworth Food Festival, Chris has again achieved great success in the form of the Big Bite Artisan Food Festival that was held in Hotham Park, Bognor Regis last September. With the mission then and today being to help boost our local economy by being pro-active in stimulating interest in locally grown food.
Below are our objectives for the local economy and community:
- Help food producers become financially viable and sustainable by introducing them to new markets, helping them to be more accessible and encouraging more consumers and businesses to ‘buy local’.
- Engage children and disadvantaged groups in healthy diet issues, food preparation and education.
- Bring together community groups and encourage a pro-active approach to improving our economy and taking ownership of our food heritage.
- Celebrate the rich food resource and the food heroes who help make our district and West Sussex such a great place to live and visit.
We believe operating our business in a responsible and ethical way. We work with district and county councils, educational bodies and the commercial sector to get the best perspective on what actions will give the best return for the community in which we all live. We also believe in giving back to the community, for example at the Big Bite last year we built a Food Mountain. We couldn’t have done this without the support of the local community which we are truly thankful too. We collected an enormous amount of food, approximately 15,800 items which were distributed to the Food Banks in Littlehampton and Bognor Regis.
For 2014, we intend to continue building awareness of local issues and also want to continue demonstrating that fresh locally produced food can not only be cheap and easy to prepare but delicious and nutritious too.
